Through The Mist is a bildungsroman novel. Characters are drawn from a combination of characteristics and personality traits of a variety of individuals. Through the Mist is the story of a loving family as related by its youngest member, Anton, as they encounter the many obstacles, struggles, challenges, and rewards experienced by the many immigrant families who came to build a new life in this promising new world. The story of Anton and the Arantes family highlights the gifts and values these courageous people brought with them, i.e. the values of self-sacrifice, loyalty, hope, resilience and commitment to the common good. In essence, at a time when immigrant life is being portrayed as negative and self-serving, the Arantes family represents the immigrant life that helped shape the positive, constructive values that demonstrate what is great about a “melting pot” society. Through a life of personal and professional difficulties and missteps, Anton overcomes seemingly impossible obstacles and hardships and finds the will and fortitude to rise above his circumstances to become a successful and respected teacher and coach.He learns what to be and not to be through hard work and the influence of several mentors and role-models.
